Coin Auction 16 March 2005

The second part of the large collection of English Short Cross coins, 1180-1247, formed by the late Professor Jeffrey P. Mass, of Palo Alto, California, the best such group ever to have been sold at auction, grossed £60,165 (£69,190 including buyers' premium) when sold by Dix Noonan Webb on 16 March. After a briskly-conducted session attended by many of the principal collectors of the series, the total paid for Mass short cross coins has advanced to £131,140 (£150,811), with two further sales scheduled for 2006 and 2007.

As expected, the top price for a Mass coin was realised by his Henry III round halfpenny (lot 782), an extreme rarity "for which there are more buyers than specimens in existence," said Michael Sharp, DNW's cataloguer. Opening at £2,800, the bidding was contested by several collectors before the hammer finally fell at £7,500 (£8,625) in favour of the Fitzwilliam Museum, Cambridge; one of the highest prices ever paid for a post-Conquest English hammered silver halfpenny. Elsewhere, an extremely rare class Vic penny of York (lot 767) was chased to £1,200 (£1,380), comfortably breaking the auction record for a short cross penny set in March last year. A private collector bid £700 (£805) for an early Henry II issue from Wilton (lot 450), while a similar and attractive coin of Oxford dot 506), formerly in the collection of the Ashmolean Museum, Oxford, cost £460 (£529). A well-struck early Canterbury penny of King John (lot 630) needed £420 (£483). As last year, the Mass property concluded with a run of Henry III long cross pennies, which saw yet another record price, the £1,100 (£1,265) paid by a North American private collector for a class lib of Norwich from the Wells and Woodhead collections (lot 814), almost ten times the pre-sale estimate. An unprepossessing class Ilia coin of Carlisle (lot 816), which wasn't fine enough to merit illustration in the sale catalogue, nevertheless needed £420 (£483), again ten times estimate, while the best of the rare class Ve group, a coin of London formerly in the Lockett collection (lot 825), brought £370 (£426).

The auction began with the offering of the remainder of the hoard of Roman silver denarii found at Holme, near Market Rasen, Lincolnshire, in November 2003, the British Museum having had first pick (lots 1-30). On the instructions of the landowner, the coins were offered in one lot and acquired by Coincraft for £4,000 (£4,600). More spectacular, however, was the run of Celtic coins, principally from a collection largely put together in the 1970s and off the market for a generation. The lure of fresh material, much of it rare and in unusually fine condition, contrived to bring many of the Celtic specialists to the auction in person, where between them they spent £34,455 (£39,623). A UK commission bidder acquired a superb stater of Tasciovanus (lot 74) for £2,300 (£2,645), while for the same price a UK collector in the room secured what will probably prove to be a previously unrecorded Atrebatic quarter-stater (lot 127), for which bidding opened at a mere £300. Another collector successfully acquired an early 'North East Coast' stater, once owned by Sir Arthur Evans and which had also been in the British Museum collection (lot 48) for £1,700 (£1,955). An exceptionally rare silver unit of the northern ruler Volisios Dumnocoveros (lot 111), almost certainly the finest known, was bought by Chris Rudd for £1,350 (£1,553), the same buyer acquiring a very rare stater naming Dumno Tigir Seno (lot 109), with an impressive pedigree dating back to 1882, for £1,300 (£1,495). A Dobunnic stater naming Anted (lot 96), at one time in the collection of Richard Mack, cost £1,200 (£1,380), while a well-struck little bronze of Cunobelin (lot 88) which had sold for the then remarkable price of £1 1 in 1888, needed £550 (£633).

A group of 19 Charles I shillings of the Oxford mint from an old collection were keenly contested, but in the event one private buyer vanquished all the opposition, spending a total of £9,280 (£10,672). British coins from other properties featured a preponderance of hammered material, with the best early coin, a penny of Offa (lot 151) bringing £1,400 (£1,610). A Harold II penny of London (lot 1 84) fetched £1 ,250 (£1 ,438) and a well-centred penny of King /Ethelstan of East Anglia (lot 1 52), £920 (£1 ,058). Of the later pieces, a very fine angel of Richard III (lot 272) matched the estimate of £4,000 (£4,600), while £2,600 (£2,990) was bid on a James I rose ryal (lot 312), £1,700 (£1,955) for a Henry VIII Bristol mint testoon (lot 289) and £1,600 (£1,840) for a Henry V noble (lot 246).

As anticipated, the day's top price, £16,000 (£18,400), was paid by a UK private collector for the coin on the front cover of the catalogue, a George V proof crown, 1935, in gold (lot 41 1). Only 25 of these were made available to the general public at the time, tor which a ballot took place among no less than 1 ,329 applicants; the coin in the auction was literally a 'one familv owner piece, the appeal of which was enhanced by original paperwork from the Royal Mint. Elsewhere, a telephone bidder claimed a Charles II five-guineas, 1668 (lot 338) for £4,200 (£4,830), while a similar coin dated 1701 (lot 355) needed £2,900 (£3,335) and an 1826 proof two-pounds (lot 380), £2,600 (£2,990). Best of the proof sets was an 1887 (lot 437), which commanded £5,000 (£5,750). A representative run of Scottish coins featured a James V unicorn (lot 900), bid to £2,200 (£2,530), a Charles I Briot unite (lot 924) bought by Baldwin for £1,050 (£1,208) and a Robert III heavy coinage gold lion (lot 888) secured by a £1,000 (£1 150) commission.

In the Irish series, a private collector snapped up an extremely rare Charles I Inchiquin money groat of the annulets issue dot 953) for £7,000 (£8,050), while an Hiberno-Norse bracteate named alter the group of similar pieces found at S< rabo Hill, co. Down, from the Chapman and Brady collections (lot 947) realised £900 (£1,035).

Over 470 lots were devoted to British trade tokens, which were keenly anticipated and collectively realised £76,275 (£87,716). The session started with a small collection of twenty-six 17th century issues of Cornwall, notable for their unusually fine condition. In the event, a single West Country telephone bidder saw off all the opposition, which was considerable and hard-hitting, proceeding to acquire the whole group for a total of £7,620 (£8,763). Along the way he paid £720 (£828) for what is believed to be the only known

halfpenny of Ralph Beard of Penzance, 1 669 (lot 1 098), £620 (£71 3) for a 1 657 farthing of Thomas Trewolla of Truro (lot 1 1 05) and £420 (£483) for a 1667 halfpenny of Peter Stephens of Saltash (lot 1101). A farthing of Peter Swimer of Padstow, 1664, which cost the then princely sum of £33 in 1973 (lot 1095) needed £450 (£518).

Next on the auction block was the very important holding of 1 7th century tokens of Kent formed by the late Robert Hogarth of Canterbury. In the event, this seminal offering of 561 different pieces, the best such collection to appear at auction for nearly 70 years, grossed £22,380 (£25,737) and was well dispersed. To gasps of astonishment the best local group, comprising ten pieces from Woolwich (lot 1 241), was knocked down for £1 ,500 (£1 ,725). The buyer of it also acquired five tokens of Bromley (lot 1116) for £440 (£506), while ten tokens from Dartford (lot 1 1 36) needed £400 (£460), as did a similar-sized group from Milton-next-Cravesend (lot 1196). Best single piece was a halfpenny of Thomas Reader of Bredgar (lot 1114), for which £350 (£403) was paid. The Hogarth property was followed by a small collection of 17th century tokens of Rutland, collectively sold for £2,365 (£2,720); a heart-shaped 1668 halfpenny of the Uppingham issuer Peter Barriffe (lot 1253) also brought £350 (£403).

The first part of the collection of 18th century tokens formed by David Litrenta of York, Pennsylvania, proved to be another complete sell-out at £36,1 30 (£41 ,550). Another high-quality offering, only a fifth of the 240 lots were acquired by buyers from outside the UK, proving that the domestic market in these tokens continues to strengthen. Best price here was the £720 (£828) paid by a commission bidder for an attractive example of Wyon's Newmarket penny, 1 799 (lot 1 269). Another 1 799 penny, of the Cambridge carrier James Burleigh (lot 1267) brought £520 (£598), while a 1795 penny of David Rebello of Hackney, which once belonged to the noted collector Richard Dalton (lot 1328) fetched £480 (£552). A very rare silver proof halfpenny issued by the proprietors of the Gloucester & Berkeley Canal Company in 1797 (lot 1298) made £460 (£529). Among the other properties of tokens, a heart-shaped halfpenny of Roger Dickinson of Robin Hood's Bay, Yorkshire (lot 1 503) cost £520 (£598) and a laudatory medal of the Prince of Wales (lot 1 527), made c.1800 and included in Dalton & Hamer's work on 18th century tokens as a 'Penny of Ayr' soared away to £390 (£449).

The closing session of banknotes began with a John Bradbury £1 , 1 91 7, with the desirable A/8 000001 serial number (lot 1 61 2), knocked down for £1,000 (£1,150). Scottish notes enjoyed a good following, with a Commercial Bank £100, 1951 (lot 1655) bringing £600 (£690) and a rare Union Bank £5, 1916 (lot 1678), £480 (£552). The Provincial Bank of Ireland £10, 1931 (lot 1734), which graced the back cover of the catalogue, was secured by an Irish commission of £1,050 (£1,208), while a Central Bank of Ireland £50, 1947 (lot 1726) needed £800 (£920).

In total, the 1,803 lots in the auction grossed £363,825 (£418,399) for 90 different vendors; there were 250 individual buyers.

As is almost a tradition, our first coin auction of the New Year has a heavy bias towards British material, much of it emanating from a number of private collections pul together within the last three decades on both sides of the Atlantic.

The ancient world is represented Iry denarii from the hoard found at Holme, Lincolnshire, in 2003 and, more spectacularly, by a group of Celtic coins from a collection largely acquired in the 1970s and off the market for a generation. Rarities here include well struck staters naming Dumno Tigir Seno (lot 109, with a distinguished pedigree dating back to the early 1880s), Esup Rasu and Vep Corf (lots 106-7), other examples of Calti and Tasciovanus (lots 74 and 98) and an extremely rare Corio quarter-stater (lot 100).

An interesting group of Charles I Oxford mint shillings from an old collection precedes the general run of British coins. The hammered silver here is wide ranging, from a portrait penny of Offa (lot 151) to an Elizabeth I crown (lot 308), taking in no less than three Henry VIII testoons (lots 287-9) and some rare issues of the Norman period. Cold is in the minority, but includes an Elizabeth I pound (lot 301), a good Richard III angel (lot 272) and a pleasing James I rose ryal (lot 312). Star of the milled section is one of the very rare George V Silver Jubilee proof crowns in gold (lot 41 1), offered with associated correspondence from the Royal Mint; elsewhere there are a number of five-guineas, including a particularly fine example dated 1 748 (lot 365).

The second session is devoted entirely to the numismatic century which encompasses the Short and Long Cross coinages - a rare treat for the many enthusiasts of these series. The late Professor Jeffrey Mass's collection is separately introduced inside the catalogue - this second dispersal is notably highlighted by an extremely rare round halfpenny (lot 782) - and is complemented by a further collection of Long Cross coins. All this is followed by a broad run of Scottish coins, many in affordable condition, as well as a small group of Irish material which includes one major rarity, a Charles I Inchiquin groat (lot 953).

Over 470 lots are devoted to British tokens, beginning with 26 17th century Cornish issues, for the most part very rare and in unusually fine condition; many derive from the collection of John Mayne, co-author of the most recent county reference. The important collection of Kent 17th century tokens formed by the late Robert Hogarth is further introduced inside the catalogue - a once-in-a-generation offering of the second largest holding of the county in existence, put together by Robert in just 12 years. Next are 14 tokens from England's smallest county, Rutland, in recent times subsumed by Leicestershire but now once again an independent shire. Devotees of the 18th century series will find plenty of interest in the collection formed by David Litrenta, again the subject of a separate introduction. Many of the 602 pieces in this group are from important auctions of the past and a glance at the catalogue illustrations (or better still, the high-resolution enlargements on the DNW website) will demonstrate just what a high quality offering this is.

The evening session of paper money starts with a third issue Bradbury £1 with a very low serial number (lot 1612). A good series of Scottish notes features a £100 of the Commercial Bank of Scotland, 1951 (lot 1655), while the Irish group includes a very rare Provincial Bank of Ireland £10, 1931 (lot 1734). The world section is characterised by a number of elusive PoW and concentration camp issues.

THE HOLME (LINCOLNSHIRE) HOARD OF ROMAN SILVER DENARII

This hoard, discovered with the aid of a metal detector on ploughed land at hlolme, Lincolnshire by Messrs. I.

Robinson and j. Sparks on 25 November 2003, comprised 408 silver denarii and sherds from the lower part of a small grey ware jar or flagon.

A typical early Severan hoard, the coins in it date from very worn examples of the triumvir Mark Antony, issued for his legion just prior to the Battle of Actium in 31 BC, to those minted for Septimius Severus, the latest dated to AD 209. A total of 7 7 5 coins were acquired by the British Museum and the balance, offered here in its entirety, returned to the landowner.

Notes

Professor Jeffrey P. Mass (1940-2001)

A native New Yorker, born on 29 June 1940, Jeffrey Mass entered Hamilton College, Clinton, New York in 1958. Enjoying life as an undergraduate, he was introduced to Japanese history by Professor Edwin Lee. He graduated in 1962 and, having been captivated by his studies, went to Japan where, while teaching English, he immersed himself in its language and culture. On returning to New York he undertook a graduate study in Japanese history at New York University before moving to Yale University, where he achieved a Ph.D. in 1973 under the tutelage of the late Professor John Hall, an acclaimed scholar always to be revered by Mass as his mentor. On achieving his doctorate Jeffrey Mass joined the faculty of Stanford University, where he attained a professorship in a record eight years. Entitled Yamoto Ichihashi Professor of Japanese Culture and Civilisation, he received many academic awards, including a Guggenheim Fellowship. He covered the period of the Shogunate and the early period of the Samurai, writing ten books based on impressive documentation, new views and interpretations. His works greatly added to the western understanding of early Japanese history and were hailed by his then academic peers. He became recognised as the leading and most productive scholar of his field in America, if not the whole of the Western World.

In parallel with his post at Stanford, Jeffrey Mass held an ongoing summer post at Oxford University, initially teaching at St Antony's College before moving to Hertford College. Hertford, as a result of his persuasiveness, was to host several B.A.N.S. weekend lecture courses. It was a delightful venue, close to the Ashmolean Museum and some of the finest taverns in the city, where extra-curricular numismatic debate was as much enjoyed as the fare provided. His last academic accolade came from Hertford: he was appointed an Honorary Fellow of the College shortly before his death on 30 March 2001, a rare and possibly unprecedented award to a foreigner. American he might have been, but he was also a pronounced Anglophile who thoroughly enjoyed his seasonal residence, his involvement with English numismatics and the friendships he had made in the course of it all.

Professor Mass had formed a small collection of American coins which he sold in early adult life. His interest was rekindled in the summer of 1984 (the year he was elected to the British Numismatic Society) when he had a brief dalliance with late Anglo-Saxon coins before turning to the Short Cross series because it spanned the period of Japanese history to which he had devoted his academic life. The series was to receive similar dedication. Eight years on he read and published his authoritative work on Class la, a great achievement. In his fifteen years of collecting he accumulated not the largest, but arguably the most comprehensive representation of the series. This was recognised by the decision to make his collection the subject of a volume in the Sylloge of Coins of I he* British Isles series, an acknowledgement of its importance.

I ike Jeffrey North before him, Jeffrey Mass undertook the authorship of his own collection.

His collection, which also includes Long Cross and other coins (acquired with the view that they might be useful in barter for Short Cross), is being offered in four parts at intervals of twelve months or so. As in Part I, sold on 17 March 2004, an effort has been made to present a balanced representation of the collection in the hope that it will provide interest to the specialist and general collector alike. It also affords a continuing opportunity for his friends to acquire mementoes.

Many of the coins have celebrated provenances and a number of rarities are i nr luded in this offering. The 1 bl penny of Willelm of Northampton (lot 504), said by Elmore Jones to be the only known coin of the moneyer for the class with a positive Northampton mint-reading, together with the round halfpenny (lot 782), the first specimen to be offered on the market for some years, are worthy of particular note.

Professor Mass kept his coins in envelopes, on which he recorded their details. These, together with relevant tickets, are sold with the lots. The catalogue is by sub-class, with mules listed under the later of the two classifications represented; within the constraints of the typeface, all legends are as shown on the coins. To avoid future confusion regarding this important collection, lot numbers are consecutive to those of Part I.
